India Launches One of the World’s Largest AI Literacy Programs

IIT Madras-incubated Bodhan AI aims to train 1 million teachers by 2027

Chennai / New Delhi : Bodhan AI, a Centre of Excellence in AI for Education incubated at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, has launched one of the world’s largest AI Literacy for Teachers programs, targeting the training of over 1 million teachers by 2027.

The initiative was announced by Dharmendra Pradhan during the IIT Madras Technology Summit held at Bharat Mandapam on May 5, 2026.


🤖 AI to Become a Teacher’s Everyday Assistant

The program aims to transform classroom teaching by integrating Artificial Intelligence into daily educational workflows instead of treating it as an additional tool.

The initiative focuses on enabling AI-assisted:

  • Lesson planning
  • Content creation
  • Assessments and evaluation
  • Multilingual teaching support
  • Student feedback systems

🇮🇳 “Future-Ready India” Vision

Speaking on the occasion, Dharmendra Pradhan said:

“Training one million teachers is not just a milestone of scale, but the foundation of a responsible, ethical and India-centric AI ecosystem in education aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat.”

He emphasized that AI integration in classrooms would empower teachers to become architects of a future-ready India.


🎓 IIT Madras Highlights Importance of AI Literacy

V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, stated that India’s diversity and scale require technology-driven educational transformation.

He noted that AI literacy among teachers is essential to ensure meaningful adoption of emerging technologies in classrooms and improve learning outcomes at scale.


📚 Reducing Teacher Workload Through AI

According to Mitesh Khapra, the initiative aims to make AI a trusted “co-pilot” for teachers.

The program is expected to:

  • Reduce teacher workload
  • Improve teaching quality and consistency
  • Enable personalized learning experiences
  • Support multilingual education delivery

Instead of fragmented AI tool usage, the initiative introduces a structured AI-integrated teaching workflow.


🚀 Nationwide Rollout Planned

The rollout will happen in multiple phases:

  • Pre-pilot and pilot programs in coming months
  • First public cohort launch on Teachers’ Day (September 5, 2026)
  • Expansion to 1 million teachers by 2027

The initiative forms part of the broader Bharat EduAI Stack vision developed by Bodhan AI.
