IIT Bombay Hosts Commencement 2026
DRDO Chief Samir V. Kamat Inspires 2,500 Graduating Students
Mumbai : Indian Institute of Technology Bombay hosted Commencement 2026 at its Convocation Hall, celebrating the achievements of students graduating in the current academic year.
Approximately 2,500 students, along with their families and batchmates, attended the ceremony marking a significant milestone in their academic journey.

🎓 DRDO Chief Inspires Graduating Batch
The event was graced by Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development (DD R&D) and Chairperson of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), as the Chief Guest.
In his commencement address, he emphasized:
“Learning is a lifelong process. To succeed, one must be adaptive, collaborative, willing to take risks, and resilient through failures.”
He further highlighted the importance of technological self-reliance, stating that India’s future depends on innovation and scientific strength.

🏛️ IIT Bombay’s Vision for Future Education
Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, presented the institute’s annual report for 2025–26, noting that the institution continues to rank among the top universities in India and globally.
He stated that IIT Bombay is shifting towards a learning-centric approach, where:
- Students actively collaborate and innovate
- Research evolves from “know-how” to “do-how”
- Focus remains on emerging fields like AI, sustainability, and biomedical technologies

🌟 Leadership, Character and Nation Building
K. Radhakrishnan emphasized the importance of “Knowing, Doing and Being”, urging students to develop character, courage, and adaptability.
He encouraged graduates to contribute meaningfully to society, the nation, and humanity.
🎉 Celebrating the Graduating Class
The ceremony included participation from:
- 🎓 1,257 Undergraduate students
- 🎓 1,042 Postgraduate students
- 🎓 189 PhD scholars
Students were invited to the dais to be congratulated by the Director, creating a memorable moment for the graduating class.

📺 A Milestone Event for Students
Introduced in 2023, the Commencement ceremony allows students to celebrate their IIT journey with peers and family before formally graduating.
The event was attended by faculty members, Board of Governors, and families, and was also streamed live on the institute’s official YouTube channel.

The Commencement 2026 ceremony marked not just the end of an academic journey, but the beginning of new opportunities, as IIT Bombay graduates step into the next phase of their professional and personal lives.
