Landmark Biosciences and Healthcare Initiatives Launched at IIT Bombay

PM Modi Unveils Wadhwani Hub and Wadhwani Innovation and Translation Centre

Mumbai : In a historic step toward establishing India as a global leader in biosciences, healthcare, and bioengineering, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced the launch of two transformative initiatives at the YUGM Innovation Conclave held at IIT Bombay — the Wadhwani Hub for Biosciences, Bioengineering, Health and Medicine, and the Wadhwani Innovation and Translation Centre (WITC).

The initiatives, a joint effort by the Government of India, IIT Bombay, and the Wadhwani Foundation, are envisioned to accelerate research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in critical sectors of national and global importance.

“The Wadhwani Hub and WITC will help make India a global leader in biosciences and healthcare. Through innovation-led development, job creation, skill-building, and impact-driven research, we aim to improve the quality of life and promote socio-economic progress.” – Dr. Romesh Wadhwani, Founder of Wadhwani Foundation

With a philanthropic commitment of ₹100 crore from the Wadhwani Foundation and a matching ₹200 crore to be raised by IIT Bombay, the initiative will be anchored in a forthcoming 120,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility. The Hub will focus on interdisciplinary M.Tech. and Ph.D. programs, cutting-edge research, and AI-enabled medical and healthcare innovation.

The Wadhwani Innovation and Translation Centre (WITC), housed within the Hub, will play a critical role in bridging the gap between laboratory research and real-world applications. It will serve as a national platform for translational research, startup incubation, and commercialization of scientific breakthroughs.

This builds on the Foundation’s earlier initiatives, including the Wadhwani Research Centre for Bioengineering (WRCB), further strengthening a decade-long commitment to research excellence at IIT Bombay.

“This initiative will not only enhance our academic and research capabilities but also foster entrepreneurship and innovation that address pressing global health challenges.” – Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay,

Dr. Ajay Kela, President and CEO of the Wadhwani Foundation, has been instrumental in expanding the Foundation’s impact across over 10 countries through entrepreneurship and skilling programs that deliver long-term socio-economic outcomes.

This strategic partnership between IIT Bombay and the Wadhwani Foundation reflects a shared vision to create a world-class ecosystem integrating education, innovation, and real-world impact.
