University of Hyderabad Celebrates 77th Republic Day with Solemnity and Patriotic Spirit

The University of Hyderabad celebrated the 77th Republic Day of India with solemnity and patriotic fervour on its campus on Monday. The celebrations commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag by Prof. B. J. Rao, Vice-Chancellor, accompanied by Dr. Devesh Nigam, Registrar, followed by the National Anthem, in the presence of faculty members, officers, staff, students, alumni, and their families.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. B. J. Rao reflected on the significance of the occasion and paid tribute to the nation’s founding visionaries. Emphasizing the relevance of constitutional values, he stated that the ideals of justice, unity, and merit must guide everyday actions toward building a Viksit Bharat. He urged the university community to translate constitutional principles into meaningful societal impact that can bring real change.

Highlighting the University’s academic standing, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the University of Hyderabad continues to strengthen its position as a centre of excellence in teaching and research. Referring to global and national rankings, he stated that the University is ranked 801–850 globally in QS World University Rankings 2026, 18th among Indian universities in NIRF 2025, and has secured the top position among multidisciplinary Indian universities in the Nature Index 2025 for research publications.
Speaking on research and innovation, Prof. Rao shared that the University is currently executing 186 externally funded research projects with a total outlay exceeding ₹172 crore, along with a consistent rise in high-quality publications and patent filings. He also highlighted the establishment of INFORM, an interdisciplinary initiative focused on climate resilience and sustainability-oriented policy research.
On innovation and entrepreneurship, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the achievements of ASPIRE, the University’s incubation ecosystem. With support to over 140 startups, more than 100 patents, and nearly ₹500 crore in follow-on funding, ASPIRE has generated over 1,000 jobs and provided hands-on training opportunities to hundreds of students, reflecting the University’s commitment to a self-reliant and innovative India.

Referring to the Institution of Eminence (IoE) initiative, Prof. Rao outlined significant infrastructure developments on campus, including new hostels, academic blocks, and advanced research facilities, while emphasizing sustainable resource generation and collective responsibility in maintaining these assets.
On internationalization, he spoke about expanding global collaborations and student mobility programmes, noting that the University’s growing international footprint enhances both academic excellence and cultural exchange. He also highlighted progress under NEP 2020, Mission Mode Recruitment, and the University’s record-breaking placement performance for the academic year 2025–26.

Speaking on contributions towards national development, Prof. Rao urged students to align their aspirations with the country’s future needs. He highlighted three priority areas: high-efficiency quantum computing, advanced semiconductor manufacturing, and low-cost, high-efficiency AI models for societal benefit. He also emphasized the importance of social equity and affordable healthcare delivery systems.
Concluding his address, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the University’s guiding vision of “National Needs, Global Standards”, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He described the University of Hyderabad as a living example of unity in diversity and called upon the community to renew its pledge to serve the nation through education, innovation, and social responsibility.

The celebrations concluded with cultural performances by students of the University of Hyderabad Campus School. A vibrant lezim dance showcased energy, discipline, and national pride, while another performance artistically depicted India’s achievements over the past year in fields such as women’s sports, hockey, cricket, and highlighted the Indian Armed Forces’ resolute response to terrorism through Operation Sindoor.
The performances evoked a strong sense of pride and shared responsibility, bringing the University community together to honour the true spirit of the Republic.
