Training Workshop on Enhanced Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Program (EGASP) Held at IMS BHU

Varanasi : The STI-SRC, Department of Microbiology at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), organized a comprehensive training workshop on the Enhanced Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Program (EGASP) on 23rd November 2024. The event was sponsored by the Uttar Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (UPSACS) and the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO).

This specialized workshop was designed for technical staff, STI counselors, medical officers from district hospitals, and junior residents, aiming to equip them with the latest knowledge and skills for effective surveillance and management of gonococcal infections. The training focused on addressing the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea.

The EGASP initiative, launched by the World Health Organization (WHO), seeks to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by improving surveillance and promoting best practices in the treatment of gonorrhea. The workshop was led by Prof. Pradyot Prakash, In-charge of the STI-SRC, along with Deputy In-charge Prof. Deepak Kumar and Prof. Satyendra K. Singh, In-charge of the Suraksha Clinic at SS Hospital, BHU. Their expert guidance helped participants understand the critical aspects of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gonococcal infections.

The key topics covered included diagnostic advancements, antimicrobial stewardship, and the importance of real-time data collection to monitor and control the spread of resistant gonococcal strains. The sessions were interactive, fostering lively discussions among the participants and enhancing their understanding of best practices in managing sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

The workshop concluded with a valedictory session attended by Prof. Gopal Nath, Dean of Research at IMS-BHU, who commended the department for its initiative in advancing knowledge and skills in public health and microbiology. Faculty members from the Department of Microbiology also contributed to the discussions, ensuring a well-rounded learning experience for all attendees.

The training workshop marked a significant step in enhancing the capacity of healthcare providers to combat antimicrobial resistance, underlining the commitment of IMS BHU to excellence in public health microbiology and the fight against STIs.
