Tezpur University Accepts Student Demands, Announces Zubeen Garg Memorial Initiatives
Tezpur, Assam: Tezpur University has formally responded to the letter of demands submitted by its students on September 21, 2025, assuring that all points raised will be taken up for necessary administrative action.
In an official statement, the University clarified that the Tezpur University Students’ Council (TUSC) is a statutory body under the Tezpur University Act, 1993. To consider the students’ request for renaming it as the Tezpur University Students’ Union, the administration will initiate the due parliamentary process for amending the Act. The proposal will be moved through the Academic Council and the Board of Management, along with the creation of a structural framework for a Students’ Union.

Honouring the legacy of the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the University announced several key initiatives:
- A statue of Zubeen Garg will be installed at a designated site on campus.
- The University is considering conferring a posthumous Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his immense contribution to Assamese culture and music.
- A scholarship in his name will be instituted within the Department of Cultural Studies to support and nurture young talent in art, culture, and music.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, while offering floral tributes to Zubeen Garg during a student interaction on September 22, 2025, reiterated that neither the University nor its administration supports any action detrimental to the interests of the state or its students.
The interaction, held in front of the Administrative Building, was attended by faculty members, university officials, and a large gathering of students, marking a significant step in strengthening dialogue between the administration and the student community.
