Successful Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty Performed at IMS, BHU on 10-Year-Old Girl
Varanasi : A high-risk balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty was successfully performed yesterday on a 10-year-old girl with severe pulmonary stenosis at the Department of Cardiology, IMS, BHU. The procedure was carried out by a dedicated team of doctors, including Dr. Dharmendra Jain, Dr. Pratibha Rai (Assistant Professor), Dr. Srashti, and Dr. Arjun. This complex procedure was done under the CM/PM relief fund.
The patient’s condition was critical, with oxygen saturation levels at just 80% and severe right ventricular dysfunction. Despite these challenges, the procedure was successful, and the patient is now stable. She was discharged after two days of recovery.
This procedure marks a significant milestone for the Department of Cardiology, which, since the joining of Dr. Pratibha Rai, a pediatric cardiologist, last month, has treated approximately 10 patients with congenital heart diseases. Prof. Vikas Agrawal, Head of the Department, praised the efforts of the medical team and announced that pediatric cardiology services will now be regularly available at IMS, BHU.
Prof. Siddharth Lakhotia, Head of Cardiac Surgery, expressed his joy over the establishment of this much-needed facility. He emphasized that children who previously required open-heart surgery for heart defects can now receive treatment without the need for invasive surgery.
