SNDT Women’s University Celebrates 75th Convocation Ceremony

Mumbai : The 75th Convocation of Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University, Asia’s first women’s university, was held on September 23, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Sir Sitaram and Lady Shantabai Patkar Convocation Hall, Churchgate. Established in 1916 by Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve to empower women through education, the University continues to uphold its motto “Sanskritā Strī Parāśakti”.

Presiding over the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ujwala Chakradeo congratulated the graduating students and urged them to imbibe the ideals of Maharshi Karve in their personal and professional lives. She highlighted the University’s remarkable journey of over 110 years and announced that SNDT has recently been granted MERU – Multidisciplinary Education Research University status under the Prime Minister’s Higher Education Campaign and reaccredited with an ‘A+’ grade by NAAC.

The convocation was graced by Shri Nitinji Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, as Chief Guest, and Smt. Sumitra Mahajan, Former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who was conferred the prestigious Honorary D.Litt. (Honoris Causa). In her address, Smt. Mahajan recounted the visionary efforts of Maharshi Karve in establishing the University through public donations and his progressive advocacy of widow remarriage during the pre-independence era. She expressed her pride in receiving the honorary degree from an institution dedicated to women’s empowerment.

Shri Gadkari congratulated the University on its glorious legacy and encouraged graduates to continue learning and embrace new technologies to contribute to an Atmanirbhar Bharat and the nation’s goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy.

During the ceremony, Dr. Sanjay Nerkar, Director of the Examination and Evaluation Board, announced that a total of 18,366 students received their degrees and diplomas, including 13,626 Bachelor’s Degrees, 2,656 Master’s Degrees, 96 PG Diplomas, and 1,988 UG Diplomas across 193 courses in four major faculties. Additionally, 22 Ph.D. scholars were awarded doctorate degrees. The University also presented 72 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 1 trophy, and 137 prizes to meritorious students.

The dignitaries present on the dais included Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ujwala Chakradeo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ruby Ojha, Registrar Prof. Vilas Nandavadekar, Finance & Accounts Officer Shri Vikas Desai, and university deans. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Registrar Prof. Nandavadekar.
