“Right to Mental Health” Seminar Concludes at Guru Kashi University
Bathinda (Talwandi Sabo) : A two-day seminar sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the theme “Right to Mental Health” concluded successfully at Guru Kashi University (GKU), featuring insightful deliberations and practical recommendations aimed at strengthening India’s mental health ecosystem.
Addressing the gathering during the valedictory session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Rameshwar Singh emphasized the importance of cultivating a positive mindset among youth. He urged students to manage avoidable stress by engaging in constructive, creative, and goal-oriented activities.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Bawa Singh, Professor of International Affairs, Central University of Punjab, who highlighted the urgent need to normalize conversations around mental health. He called upon the government to enhance awareness initiatives, ensure mental health insurance parity with physical health, and address the severe shortage of trained professionals—currently less than one psychologist per one lakh population.
Focusing on technology-driven mental health support, Dr. Sanyam Gupta, Senior Advisor, Tele-MANAS App, Punjab, introduced participants to the MANAS mobile application and the Government of India’s 24×7 mental health helpline 14416, designed to provide immediate psychological assistance.

Sharing practical guidance, Dr. Ravinder Puri advised students to cope with stress by setting ambitious goals, staying calm during adversity, and channeling their energy toward meaningful accomplishments.
Presenting the seminar report, Convener Dr. Amandeep Kaur informed that the event witnessed active participation of over 300 students, along with legal experts, police officials, and professionals from diverse fields.
In the vote of thanks, Nodal Officer Dr. Amit Tuteja reaffirmed Guru Kashi University’s commitment to organizing more such programs to promote mental health awareness and dispel prevailing myths.
The seminar was further enriched by the presence of Dr. Piyush Verma, while the proceedings were efficiently moderated by Dr. Genius Walia and Dr. Jyotsana.
