Pondicherry University and NIDM Collaborate to Conduct Training on Disaster Risk Management & Climate Change Adaptation

Pondicherry, March 10, 2025 : The Department of Social Work, School of Social Sciences and International Studies, Pondicherry University, in collaboration with the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has organized a Five-Day Training of Trainers Programme on “Engaging Youth and Adolescents in Disaster Risk Management & Climate Change Adaptation.” The training, which will run from March 10 to 14, 2025, at the Convention-Cum-Cultural Centre, Pondicherry University, aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to actively engage youth and adolescents in disaster risk management and climate change adaptation strategies.

The programme commenced with participant registration from six diverse categories: NSS, NCC, Indian Red Cross Society, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Civil Defense Volunteers, and Aapda Mitra. The inaugural session, held on March 10, 2025, at the Seminar Hall of the Convention-Cum-Cultural Centre, Pondicherry University, was graced by esteemed dignitaries and experts in the field.

Dr. K. Anbu, Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work at Pondicherry University, delivered the Welcome Address, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries and participants. Dr. Balu I, Program Coordinator at NIDM, presented an overview of the training programme, outlining its objectives and structure.

In his Opening Remarks, Dr. Kumar Raka, Senior Programme Officer at NIDM, emphasized the critical role of youth and adolescents in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience. He also appreciated the initiatives taken by the Department of Social Work and Pondicherry University in bringing attention to these critical issues.

Dr. Shaheen Ansari, Emergency and Education Specialist from CRY, Delhi, delivered a Special Address, stressing the importance of integrating disaster preparedness into youth education and community initiatives. Prof. G. Chandrika, Dean of the School of Social Sciences and International Studies, Pondicherry University, gave the Felicitation Address, commending the collaborative efforts of NIDM and the university in fostering youth engagement in disaster management.

The inaugural session concluded with an inspiring address by Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, Vice Chancellor (i/c) of Pondicherry University. Prof. Tharanikkarasu highlighted the significance of training programs in strengthening disaster preparedness and climate resilience and emphasized the relevance of empowering youth and communities in managing disaster risks and adapting to climate change.

Dr. A. Shahin Sultana, Professor and Project Coordinator of the Training Program, delivered the Vote of Thanks, extending appreciation to the Pondicherry University administration, NIDM officials, dignitaries, participants, and organizing committee members for their contributions to the event.

The training programme has garnered participation from 86 representatives across various sectors, showcasing a commitment to building a proactive approach to disaster risk management and climate change adaptation, particularly through youth involvement. This collaborative initiative by Pondicherry University and NIDM highlights the importance of equipping the younger generation with essential skills to address pressing environmental and disaster-related challenges.
