NHRC-Sponsored Seminar on ‘Right to Mental Health’ at Guru Kashi University

A two-day National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)-sponsored seminar on “Right to Mental Health” concluded successfully at Guru Kashi University, generating meaningful dialogue and actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening mental health systems in India.

Addressing the valedictory session, Vice Chancellor Dr. Rameshwar Singh emphasised the importance of nurturing a positive mindset among youth. He encouraged students to channel their energy into creative and constructive activities to overcome avoidable stress and anxiety.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Bawa Singh, Professor of International Affairs at the Central University of Punjab, who underscored the urgent need to eliminate societal stigma surrounding mental health. He called upon the government to enhance awareness initiatives, ensure parity between mental and physical health insurance, and address the alarming shortage of trained professionals, noting that India currently has less than one psychologist per one lakh population.

Highlighting technology-driven mental health support, Dr. Sanyam Gupta, Senior Advisor, Tele-MANAS App Punjab, introduced participants to the MANAS mobile application and the Government of India’s 24×7 mental health helpline (14416), designed to provide immediate assistance to individuals in distress.

Dr. Ravinder Puri shared practical guidance for stress management, advising students to set ambitious goals, remain composed in challenging situations, and focus on purposeful achievements.

Presenting the seminar report, Convener Dr. Amandeep Kaur stated that the event witnessed active participation from over 300 students, along with legal experts, police officials, and professionals from diverse sectors.

In the vote of thanks, Nodal Officer Dr. Amit Tuteja reaffirmed Guru Kashi University’s commitment to organising similar initiatives to promote mental health awareness and dispel prevailing myths. The seminar was further enriched by the presence of Dr. Piush Verma.

The proceedings were effectively moderated by Dr. Genius Walia and Dr. Jyotsana, ensuring engaging and insightful discussions throughout the seminar.
