IUST Architecture Department Holds Colonial Heritage Walk in Srinagar
Srinagar : The Department of Architecture at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) successfully organised a Colonial Heritage Walk along the iconic Lal Chowk Bund in Srinagar, offering students an immersive learning experience focused on architectural history and the city’s cultural past.
Students from the Architecture and Planning programmes participated in the walk, designed to enhance their understanding of urban morphology, colonial-era design elements, and Srinagar’s rich architectural heritage.

The guided heritage walk began at the Emporium Complex and continued along the Jhelum River embankment, where students explored several historically significant structures representing a unique blend of vernacular Kashmiri and European architectural styles. These buildings stand as remnants of Srinagar’s time as the summer capital of the princely state of Jammu & Kashmir.
Among the prominent sites visited were:
- Emporium Complex
- Mahatta Complex
- J&K Bank Building
- Sheikh Bagh Cemetery
The initiative offered students hands-on exposure to the city’s colonial legacy and insights into its evolving urban landscape, strengthening their academic foundation through real-world observation.
