International Community Stands in Solidarity with Gujarat University After Air India Tragedy
Ahmedabad : A wave of grief and global support has enveloped Gujarat University following the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI-171, which tragically claimed 269 lives, including several MBBS students from the university. The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, near the hostel premises of B.J. Medical College.
In the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident, Gujarat University has received an outpouring of international condolences, highlighting the deep academic and emotional connections the institution has built across the world.

From Japan to the United States and Germany, expressions of solidarity have flowed in:
- Otemon Gakuin University, Osaka, a longstanding academic partner, offered heartfelt sympathies, emphasizing the shared grief between both institutions.
- The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), New York, described the tragedy as a loss to the global Indian diaspora and the international medical education community.
- Mr. Barjinder Sodhi, President of the Berlin Hotel Association, acknowledged the emotional toll the tragedy has taken, especially on students and educators worldwide.
- The Olympus Center, Germany, expressed sorrow over the lives lost, reflecting on the unrealized potential of the young victims and reaffirming their connection to Gujarat University’s ideals.
Gujarat University, shaken by the loss, has pledged unwavering support to the bereaved families and remains resolute in honoring the dreams and legacies of the students who perished. In a public statement, the university said:
“This unfathomable tragedy has left us in deep mourning. But in this collective grief, we find strength in the compassion shown by our global community. We remain united in remembrance, resilience, and reverence.”
Memorial services and counseling support have been initiated on campus as the university community mourns together, bound by sorrow—and global solidarity.
