IIT Roorkee Convocation 2025 Marks 178 Years
For Legacy, Innovation and Academic Excellence
Roorkee, September 5, 2025 – The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, Asia’s oldest engineering college established in 1847, celebrated its Convocation 2025, conferring degrees upon 2,614 students including 1,267 undergraduates, 847 postgraduates, and 500 Ph.D. scholars.
The ceremony was graced by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Science and Technology, as Chief Guest, along with Prof. (Dr.) Nirmaljeet Singh Kalsi, IAS (Retd.) as Guest of Honour. Dr. B.V.R. Mohan Reddy, Chairman, Board of Governors, presided over the event, while Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, joined as Chief Guest for the Award Ceremony. Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, presented the annual report, highlighting the institute’s global achievements and vision.

Highlights of Convocation 2025
- 23% female representation in the graduating class; women Ph.D. graduates rose sharply to 178 in 2025, from just 57 in 2023.
- President’s Gold Medal was awarded to Vansh Saini; Director’s Gold Medal to Hardik Sahni.
- Other top awards: Shreya Mittal, Balaga Pavan Sai, and Anvadya Khare.
- Degrees awarded:
- UG: B.Tech (1094), Integrated M.Sc (75), Integrated M.Tech (53), B.Arch (36), B.Sc (09).
- PG: M.Tech (536), M.Sc (159), MBA (80), Executive MBA (27), M.Des (19), MURP (13), M.Arch (12), PG Diploma (01).
- Ph.D.: 500 across categories including dual and joint degree programmes.

Institutional Achievements,IIT Roorkee continued its strong research and innovation track:
- 146 patents filed, ₹399 crore research funding, and projects in quantum technology, hydrogen energy, defence, and sustainability.
- Recognised as a Centre of Excellence under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM).
- Ranked #339 in QS World Rankings and #1 in NIRF Architecture & Planning for the fourth year.
- Over 180+ start-ups valued at ₹4,700 crore; 1,100 job offers including 12 international placements.
- Alumni contributed ₹31 crore, supporting community and rural development initiatives.

- Dr. Jitendra Singh lauded IIT Roorkee’s role in India’s startup ecosystem, resilience research, and women’s representation in STEM, calling it “a role model academic institution.”
- Prof. K.K. Pant emphasised IIT Roorkee’s mission to deliver world-class education and research, driving India’s strategic priorities from clean energy to disaster resilience.
- Prof. N.S. Kalsi urged graduates to lead with integrity, humility, and innovation, carrying forward the institute’s legacy.
- Shri Pankaj Agarwal called on graduates to go beyond Make in India towards Invent in India, Design in India, and Lead from India.

Teachers’ Day 2025
Coinciding with the Convocation, IIT Roorkee celebrated Teachers’ Day, honouring distinguished faculty with the Excellence in Teaching and Research Awards 2025, Lifetime Teaching Achievement Award, and other prestigious recognitions. Awardees included Prof. Sparsh Mittal, Prof. A. Swaminathan, Prof. Jitin Singla, Prof. Kirtiraj K. Gaikwad, Prof. Kritika Kothari, Prof. Praveen Kumar, Prof. Ram Krishna Pandey, and Prof. Gopinath Packirisamy.
With its 178-year-old legacy, IIT Roorkee reaffirmed its position as a global leader in education, research, sustainability, and innovation, while inspiring the graduating class to contribute to Viksit Bharat @2047.
