IIT Madras and Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Partner to Develop Universal Driver Rating System

CHENNAI :
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) to jointly develop a first-of-its-kind universal driver rating system aimed at strengthening road safety and building a digital public infrastructure for nationwide rollout.

The proposed driver rating framework is envisioned as a critical enabler for commercial driving, insurance assessments, background verification, and fleet management, while also supporting policy-making through data-driven insights. The partnership seeks to create a scalable technology stack that can be deployed across India’s commercial transport ecosystem.

Addressing Gaps in Commercial Driver Safety

Monitoring commercial driver performance, safety, and well-being has become increasingly challenging due to fragmented systems, weak enforcement of regulations, and the absence of uniform standards. These gaps have led to inconsistent accountability and limited scope for systematic improvement in road safety outcomes.

The universal driver rating system aims to address these challenges by creating a transparent, incentive-driven mechanism that rewards responsible driving behaviour and helps identify and correct risky driving patterns.

Technology-Driven, Data-Led Framework

Under the partnership, IIT Madras and Daimler India will develop the Driver Rating System using data-driven approaches, leveraging smartphone-based inputs and sensor data to objectively assess driver behaviour, safety compliance, and performance over time.

Commenting on the initiative, Prof. Gitakrishnan Ramadurai, Project Coordinator, IIT Madras, said:

“Trucks and truck drivers are the backbone of our country. This project provides them an Aadhaar for their good work. The driver rating system rewards good driving and helps correct risky driving, thereby saving lives, money, and time for all stakeholders.”

Strengthening Industry–Academia Collaboration

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, said:

“IIT Madras has been at the forefront of research in road safety and mobility, with the goal of building systems, processes, and infrastructure that ensure safer outcomes for our roads, drivers, and commuters. Our partnership with Daimler underscores how industry–academia collaborations play a vital role in translating research into scalable, ready-to-implement solutions with meaningful societal impact.”

Advancing Responsible Mobility and Sustainability

Speaking on Daimler’s perspective, Alexander Schoen, Chief Financial Officer, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, said:

“At DICV, road safety and responsible mobility are central to our sustainability approach. This collaboration with IIT Madras reflects our commitment to using technology and data-driven innovation to improve driver safety, professionalism, and well-being across the commercial transport ecosystem. A universal driver rating framework can enable safer roads, stronger livelihoods, and a more accountable mobility system for India.”

Benefits Across the Transport Ecosystem

Once implemented, the universal driver rating system is expected to:

  • Incentivise safer and more responsible driving
  • Enable fleet operators and concessionaires to monitor driver performance and compliance in real time
  • Support shippers with improved delivery reliability and visibility
  • Help driving institutes certify skills and enhance driver employability
  • Provide governments with reliable data for evidence-based policymaking

Collectively, these outcomes are expected to significantly improve road safety, operational efficiency, and societal well-being.
