Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences UniversityOrganizes Oral Magnet Therapy Camp

Ludhiana : Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, successfully conducted an Oral Magnet Therapy Camp in village Mehal Kalan, aimed at safeguarding dairy animals from life-threatening internal injuries caused by ingestion of metal objects.

The camp was organized under the ICAR-sponsored Farmer FIRST Project, led by Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education and Nodal Officer of the project, and Dr. Parminder Singh, Principal Investigator. The team worked hands-on with local farmers to provide both practical demonstrations and technical inputs.

Dr. Rajesh Kasrija and Dr. Parteek Singh Dhaliwal conducted the on-ground event, where oral magnets were administered to 15 dairy animals belonging to beneficiary farmers. Dr. Rajesh explained that the oral magnet, a specially designed 70 mm long cylindrical bar magnet, helps prevent Traumatic Reticuloperitonitis (TRP), commonly known as Hardware Disease, and Diaphragmatic Hernia (DH) in dairy animals.

The therapy works by attracting and immobilizing sharp metal objects—like nails, screws, and wires—that animals may inadvertently ingest with fodder, thus preventing these items from puncturing internal organs. Dr. Parteek Singh emphasized that such foreign body diseases are a major cause of economic losses due to animal mortality and reduced productivity.

Farmers responded with keen interest and appreciation for the novel approach. The camp not only provided immediate health benefits for the animals treated but also raised crucial awareness about livestock health management practices and the need for preventive veterinary care.

The initiative by GADVASU stands as a significant step toward promoting animal health, productivity, and farmer awareness in rural Punjab.
