Farmer FIRST Project: Winter Management Camp Organised for Dairy Farmers at Mehal Kalan
Ludhiana : Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, organised a Winter Management and Mineral Mixture Feeding Camp for dairy farmers under the ICAR-sponsored Farmer FIRST Project at village Mehal Kalan.
The camp was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education and Nodal Officer of the Farmer FIRST Project. Beneficiary farmers from all the adopted villages actively participated in the programme.
🗣️ Scientific Winter Care for Dairy Animals
Dr. Parminder Singh, Principal Investigator of the project, delivered an expert lecture focusing on winter management practices and mineral mixture feeding in dairy animals.
He highlighted key winter challenges such as cold stress, reduced feed intake and increased disease risk in dairy animals.
Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of:
- Proper animal shelter
- Clean and hygienic surroundings
- Protection from cold winds
- Adequate winter care to ensure animal comfort and productivity
🥛 Nutrition & Mineral Mixture Feeding
Special focus was given to nutritional management during winter. Farmers were guided on:
- Balanced ration formulation
- Inclusion of energy-rich feeds
- Providing clean and lukewarm drinking water
Dr. Parminder Singh explained that proper nutrition during winter is essential for sustaining milk yield and overall animal health. He also elaborated on the importance of mineral mixtures, stating that they help:
- Prevent nutritional deficiencies
- Improve reproductive performance
- Strengthen immunity
- Enhance milk production
Farmers were advised to include recommended quantities of mineral mixtures regularly in daily feed.
🤝 Interactive Session & Distribution
The session was highly interactive, allowing farmers to share experiences and clarify doubts.
At the end of the programme, mineral mixture bags were distributed among beneficiary farmers, who were encouraged to continue their regular use.
