Dr. Anupam Bera of University of Hyderabad Elected Young Associate Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences
Hyderabad | January 2026:
Dr. Anupam Bera, Assistant Professor at the School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad (UoH), has been elected as a Young Associate Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS), Bengaluru, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of chemical sciences.
The prestigious IAS fellowship is awarded to promising young scientists across India who have demonstrated exceptional research excellence and potential for leadership in science and technology.
Pioneering Research in Surface and Interface Spectroscopy
Dr. Bera’s research focuses on surface- and interface-specific spectroscopy, with the broader goal of advancing renewable energy technologies. Notably, he is the first researcher in India to develop operando and in-situ transient spectroscopic techniques to investigate electrode–electrolyte and photoanode–electrolyte interfaces.
These cutting-edge techniques enable scientists to understand real-time interfacial processes, which are critical for improving the efficiency and stability of energy storage and conversion systems.

Major Research Grants and National Recognition
Within just six months of joining the University of Hyderabad, Dr. Bera’s research proposals received significant national recognition. He secured funding under multiple prestigious schemes, including:
- Prime Minister’s Early Career Research Grant (ECRG) 2025
- ANRF PAIR Grant
- Institute of Eminence (IoE), University of Hyderabad Grant
These grants underscore the national importance and high impact of his ongoing research.
Strong International Research Background
Prior to joining UoH, Dr. Bera served as a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher and Habilitation Fellow at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany, and as a Guest Scientist at the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena. His postdoctoral training also includes research stints at the University of Duisburg–Essen and the University of Jena, Germany.
High-Impact Publications and Scientific Recognition
Dr. Bera’s recent research on sodium- and potassium-ion batteries was featured on the cover of Advanced Materials Interfaces (2024). Additionally, his in-depth study on alcohol dissociation on thin-film TiO₂ surfaces was highlighted in the commemorative volume “Sixty Years of Surface-Specific Spectroscopy” (2024).
His work has appeared in several high-impact international journals, strengthening India’s footprint in advanced materials and energy research.
A Proud Moment for University of Hyderabad
Dr. Anupam Bera’s election as a Young Associate Fellow of IAS marks a significant achievement for both the researcher and the University of Hyderabad, reinforcing the institution’s growing reputation in cutting-edge scientific research and innovation.
